1 dead, multiple injured in North Royalton apartment building fire

NORTH ROYALTON, Ohio (WOIO) – One person is dead and several people were injured during a condo complex fire in North Royalton Sunday afternoon.

Dispatchers say they received the call for the fire on the 9600 block of Cove Dr. around 3 p.m.

Stan Lekarev lives in a second-floor condo with his wife, just above where the fire started. He ran out into the cold with no shoes on his feet, “The fire alarm went off and I ran out, and within three minutes it went from nothing to all black smoke and we just got our cat and got out.”

North Royalton Fire Chief Robert Chegan said when firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke and fire that spread from a first-floor unit, up to the second floor, “They made their way in there and did a search and we did find a victim in the one bedroom, a back bedroom. She was transported immediately to Metro.”

The woman believed to be in her 60s was later pronounced dead at the hospital according to Fire Chief Chegan.

The name of the deceased has not been released.

Fire investigators are still working to determine the exact cause.

Multiple people were also treated on scene for smoke inhalation.
