Police said they recovered the body of a man from the car on Friday evening, but had to kill several saltwater crocodiles to extract the remains.

“This was a difficult recovery, and made more complicated due to the presence of saltwater crocodiles – a number of which were destroyed to ensure safety of those involved in the recovery operation,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.

Police are yet to formally identify the body, but are in contact with the family of the person they believe died.

The occupant who escaped the car remains in hospital.

Police said the car was significantly damaged in the crash before it entered the water.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.
