Daniel Farke hails ‘season defining’ Leeds United win and special Jaidon Anthony tribute

Daniel Farke says Leeds United’s late 2-1 victory over Preston North End goes down as their ‘best win of the season’ so far. The Whites secured a huge three points thanks to Joel Piroe’s injury-time penalty at a packed Elland Road.

Leeds had to come from behind when Will Keane opened the scoring for the visitors in the second minute to silence the home crowd. But Daniel James soon levelled the scores, getting on the end of Junior Firpo’s cross to head home just four minutes later.

It looked as though Leeds were going to have to settle for a frustrating point until Ryan Ledson’s late handball gave substitute Piroe the chance score from the penalty spot, and the Dutchman duly obliged.

“Best win of the season,” said a delighted Farke afterwards. “We’ve been electrifying with many goals this season or when the game has been done at half-time, but to win this type of game, when you have problems in the first half to find your level . . . We started slow, not sloppy, but slow with not enough aggression.

“It was hard fought, but well-deserved win with a winner in added time. Best moments are season-defining moments. I love it when we are there with champagne football, but this type of win is the most enjoyable.

“Credit to Preston for their aggression and intensity. They are a very, very experienced side. They know in tight games what you have to do. It’s what experienced sides do. It was important we kept our nerves and cool to not allow us be bothered.”
