Echuca’s Holden Motor Museum to close its doors in April

The owners of Echuca’s National Holden Motor Museum have announced they will close its doors in April.

The news was announced by owners and directors Tony and Mark Galea via social media on Thursday, who said they were not able to find a buyer for the business and had no choice but to close.

Tony Galea said it was a difficult decision to make but it was time for himself and Mark to retire.

“I am missing out on a lot of family time, I am a grandfather now,” Mr Galea said.

“It’s just the two of us, we do everything here. It has just taken its toll on us.”

Mr Galea said the business was successful and profitable, but no one had put their hand up to buy the museum.

“We were hoping someone would buy the business and keep it going or take the business somewhere else to another regional town,” Mr Galea said.

“Its a viable business, it makes a good profit.”

The museum is the original Holden museum and was started in 1984 in Bayswater.

It then moved around to various locations, including Bendigo and Wangaratta, before opening permanently in Echuca in July 1993.

“It was opened up by the general manager of Holden at the time which was a big thing, Bill Hamel,” Mr Galea said.

“The museum is a big drawcard to Echuca, we get people here just to see us,” Mr Galea said.

“We bring people to this region and then they go and do other things.

“We were hoping it would continue, it is iconic.”

President of the Holden sporting car club of Victoria Bruce Lethborg said the news was an “absolute shock.”

“It is going to be a great loss to the history of Holden,” Mr Lethborg said.

“A lot of the stuff will end up in private collections and won’t be available for the public to see.”

The museum’s last day of trade will be April 14, with the museum’s contents being auctioned off on May 18.
