Fatal e-scooter crash in Townsville investigated by police Ethical Standards Command

A fatal e-scooter crash in north Queensland is being treated as a “death in police operations”, sparking an internal investigation.

A 35-year-old man suffered serious head injuries after striking a gutter and falling to the ground in the Townsville CBD just after 3:30am on Thursday.

Police said the e-scooter rider had been speeding away from a police vehicle in the moments before the crash.

Emergency services were called to the scene and police said officers rendered first aid.

The man was taken to the Townsville University Hospital and died the next day.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the incident – which has been deemed a “death in police operations” – on behalf of the State Coroner.

The process will be overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
