Newport County give Man Utd real scare in FA Cup but bow out despite comeback

Newport County’s hopes of an FA Cup fairytale were ended in heartbreaking fashion as they were beaten 4-2 by Manchester United despite a heroic comeback at Rodney Parade.

Bruno Fernandes’ fine strike opened the scoring after six minutes before teenager Kobbie Mainoo doubled the Premier League giants’ lead with his first United goal. The hosts looked down and out before a wonder goal from Bryn Morris brought them back into the fourth round tie before half-time.

Will Evans sent the County fans into raptures when he equalised moments into the second-half and suddenly all the momentum seemed to be with the home side. But Antony’s rebound finish and Rasmus Hojlund’s injury-time goal made it safe for the Red Devils, who will now face either Bristol City or Nottingham Forest in the next round.

Erik ten Hag’s side arrived in south Wales knowing the FA Cup was their best chance of winning silverware this season, and the United manager fielded a strong side including former Real Madrid star Casemiro and £82m striker Rasmus Hojlund. Marcus Rashford, however, was absent for what ten Hag described as an “internal matter”.

It seemed like it was going to be a long night for County when Fernandes put United in front with a well-taken effort and Mainoo’s first-time strike doubled their lead with just quarter of an hour on the clock.

Graham Coughlan’s side grew into the game, however, with Morris’ ambitious long-range effort taking a deflection as it sailed past debutant Altay Bayindir in the United goal to bring them back into it. Former farmer Evans then got in front of four-times Champions League winner Raphael Varane to grab a well-earned equaliser two minutes into the second-half to inspire hopes of a famous giant-killing.

But it wasn’t to be as Antony was in the right place at the right time to finish after Luke Shaw’s curled effort bounced off the post, with Hojlund sealing the win deep into injury time. Newport were brave, however, and can be proud of their performance after giving the 12-time winners an almighty scare.

Money, money, money

A slight difference in the cost of today’s starting XI, with County fielding a line-up made up of loanees or players signed on a free, totalling, you guessed it, £0.

United, on the other hand, spent a whopping £417 million on their line-up, with £80m defender Harry Maguire also among the substitutes.

With a few minutes to go until half-time, Liverpool currently lead Norwich 2-1 with goals from Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez coming either side of Ben Gibson’s equaliser.

Meanwhile, Watford are 1-0 up against Southampton through Matheus Martins.

FT: Wolves 2-0 West Brom

That clash between West Brom and Wolves has now ended – two and a half hours after it kicked off – with the Premier League side earning a 2-0 win at The Hawthorns.

Pedro Neto opened the scoring before Matheus Cunha doubled their lead in the 77th minute, sparking the crowd trouble that saw the game suspended for 35 minutes.

FA Cup drama

Newport County could pull off one of the all time great FA Cup giant killings tonight, but this weekend has certainly not been short of drama so far.
