Police identify suspect in shooting of Wilbraham officer


SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – In developing news out of Wilbraham, a police officer was shot on Saturday evening on Old Carriage Road.

We learned from police the suspect has been identified as 53-year-old Michael Ortega, and the injured officer is a 29 year old man. They exchanged gunfire at a home, leading to an hours-long standoff after the shooter barricaded himself inside the house.

Western Mass News went on-scene in Wilbraham on Saturday night, where we saw multiple local police departments, State Police, K-9 units, medics, and several others responding to the standoff inside one of the cul-de-sac’s homes.

The incident started before 8:30 p.m. when Wilbraham police officers responded to a residence on Old Carriage Road regarding a male who was threatening others in the home.

When officers arrived, they exchanged gunfire with 53-year-old Ortega, who was inside. An unnamed 29-year-old male Wilbraham police officer suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital.

State Police report that they responded to the scene to assist area police departments minutes later at around 8:40 p.m.

Members of State Police Special Tactical Operations, or ‘STOP’ rescued two home occupants who escaped onto the roof of the house’s garage.

According to state police, just after midnight, STOP deployed an armored vehicle with a battering ram to break a large window in front of the home on the ground level. A drone was sent into the home by state police feeding back video, which revealed Ortega in a front breezeway of the home with gunshot wounds. STOP troopers entered the home and placed him in custody. According to state police, a handgun and ammunition were found next to Ortega.

State police report Ortega was treated on-scene and then transported to a nearby hospital.

Wilbraham Police have reported that Ortega is in stable condition. His booking charges are assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.

The incident remains under investigation by the Wilbraham Police Department, State Police, and the Hampden District Attorney’s office.
