Police investigate video showing car hit cyclist

Police confirmed they are also investigating a video that was posted on Instagram showing a car moving across a road to hit a cyclist with a red bike light, causing the rider to smash into the passenger side of the front windscreen.

Police are investigating after disturbing vision of two cyclists being hit by cars in Melbourne was posted to social media.

The video was uploaded to an anonymous social media account – seen by The Age – before 6am on Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, Victoria Police Inspector Scott Dwyer said investigators believed the crashes, in Cheltenham and Beaumaris about 5.20am, were linked due to the similar offending.

He was aware of vision circulating on social media showing a car hit a cyclist, but said police were still investigating whether it was linked to either of the crashes.

“That said, those images that we’ve seen online are disgusting,” Dwyer said.

“The bicyclist is hit from behind by a car with no regard for their safety. It is such that I could very easily be sitting here today, appealing for the witnesses to two tragic deaths.”

Dwyer urged the offenders to hand themselves in and warned that if the video posted on social media was from one of the bayside crashes: “You are facing serious, serious charges.”

Investigators are also examining if both crashes were deliberate and whether a stolen car later found damaged in Black Rock was involved.

Police said a 51-year-old male cyclist was hit by an unidentified vehicle on Beach Road, near Charman Road in Cheltenham, shortly before 5.20am.

“The car failed to stop, and the rider was taken to hospital with serious injuries,” police said in a statement.

Shortly after, a 72-year-old male cyclist was struck on Beach Road in nearby Beaumaris, near Tramway Parade.

“He, too, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and again, the vehicle involved failed to stop,” police said.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics responded to incidents reported five minutes apart, at 5.15am and 5.20am. Both men suffered upper-body injuries and were in a stable condition in hospital, a spokesperson said.

Police said they were called to Central Avenue, Black Rock about 8.50am after an allegedly stolen Holden Astra was found.

Radio station 3AW, which first reported the hit-run crashes, posted photos of the car that showed a smashed windscreen and damaged left rear passenger door.
