Runaway minibus rolls back and kills driver who had just got out


A minibus driver has been killed after his vehicle rolled back over him moments after he got out, according to police. The 66-year-old driver of a black Mercedes minibus died in the tragedy in the Kenfig Hill area of Bridgend on Monday afternoon.

Police initially put out a warning to motorists to avoid the area saying they had been called to Trederwen at around 2.30pm with officers warning of a “serious” crash and the road closed in both directions from the Talbot Road roundabout.




South Wales Police duty inspector Craig Bannister on Monday night confirmed that a man had tragically died in the incident which had involved the minibus he had moments before been at the wheel of. Insp Bannister said: “At approximately 2.10pm on Monday, January 22, a fatal road traffic accident occurred at Penrhyn, Kenfig Hill, Bridgend.

“A 66-year-old local male had just exited his black Mercedes minibus when the vehicle rolled back causing fatal injuries to the male. Ambulance and fire service attended but unfortunately the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.


“His family are being supported by trained family liaison officers.” South Wales Police roads policing department are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them via 101 quoting reference 2400024861.

Man, 66, dies

A 66-year-old local man has died, police have confirmed. Offiicers are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Duty Inspector Craig Bannister said:

“At approximately 2.10pm on Monday, January 22 a fatal road traffic collision occurred on Penrhyn, Kenfig Hill, Bridgend. A 66-year-old local man had just exited his Black Mercedes minibus when the vehicle rolled back causing fatal injuries to the male.

“Ambulance and Fire Service attended but unfortunately the male was pronounced deceased at the scene. Family are being supported by trained family liaison officers. South Wales Police Roads Policing Department are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone with dash camera footage to contact them via 101 quoting reference 2400024861.”

Traffic

Traffic is light to moderate on main roads in the Kenfig Hill area, according to Google. On the Google map below light traffic is highlighted in green, while heavier traffic is highlighted in yellow.

Road expected to be shut for some time

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “We are at the scene of a serious collision on Trederwen, Kenfig Hill, Bridgend. The road is currently closed in both directions from the Talbot Road roundabout. It is expected to remain closed for some time. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible”

Fire service remains at the scene

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: “At approximately 2.10pm today, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to road traffic collision on Trederwen, Kenfig Hill, Bridgend. The incident is currently ongoing.”
